STAFFORD STUDENT LOANS

Stafford student loans are by far the largest portion of the student loan indebtedness in this country. Stafford student loans are available from a variety of private lenders, the largest and best known being Sallie Mae. Many national banks participate in the federally guaranteed Stafford student loan program, and many states manage a funding source for Stafford student loans (Missouri Health and Education Lending Agency, or Mohela, comes to mind).

Stafford student loans are eligible for unlimited in-school deferment, up to five years of other qualified deferment, and up to five years of forbearance. The types of deferments available vary according to the year in which the Master Promissory Note was signed.

Because Stafford student loans are made by private lenders, each company sets specific policies regarding the use of voluntary forbearance.
