PLUS STUDENT LOANS
PLUS student loans, Parental Loans for Undergraduate Students, are available through both the Stafford student loan program and the Direct (William G. Ford) student loan program.
Parent student loans are designed to fill the gap between the expected family contribution and what the family actually has to contribute.
PLUS loans are never subsidized. This means that when the loan is in deferment, the interest accrues and is capitalized. Of course, like other student loans, the parent student loans carry a slightly lower interest rate during deferment than during repayment or forbearance.
PLUS loans qualify for the same five years of qualified deferment and up to five years of forbearance as Stafford student loans or Direct student loans. However, parent student loans do not qualify for in-school deferment unless the parent/borrower is a student enrolled at least half time in an accredited school.
