HOW DO I CONFIRM THE STATUS OF MY STUDENT LOANS?
Obviously the commonly recommended way to confirm the status of your loans is simply to contact your lender. You need to keep in contact with them anyway. Never call on a Monday, you’ll be on hold for extended periods of time and the person who finally answers the phone will be rushed and harried. Fridays are almost as bad since it’s the beginning of the weekend, but Tuesdays through Thursdays you will find the account representative cheerful and helpful. At least that was my experience when I worked in the business.
But what if you have loans from more than one lender? You can make multiple telephone calls. Be certain you take careful notes so you don’t get confused.
Or you can log onto the National Student Loan Data System
and find out about all of your loans at one time. You may need to set up an account with them and obtain a personal identification number, although when I worked in the business I didn’t need one. Your social security number is also your account number. This national database lists all of your federally guaranteed student loans, including their subsidized/unsubsidized status, who currently owns the loan, and whether you are in repayment, deferment, or forbearance. One quick and easy location to confirm the status of all your student loans.
